What is a good machine for a first time home machine quilter?
Q. I have looked at the Juki 98 with the New Joy quilting frame and thought it might be a good option. I don't know much about the Juki brand machine. The Janome 6600 or 1600 was also suggested. Are there other options I should consider? Perhaps the Brother 1500?

A. Juki is a super great machine for quilting! From personal experience, I recommend forgoing the quilting frame until you are absolutely sure you want to do quilts so large they need to be put on a frame. They take up a lot of room and are expensive.

Any quilters or sewing gurus out there know where to find a pattern for a wallet? My wife is an avid quilter?
Q. I am looking for a good place that might have a large selection of patterns for wallets that you would sew yourself. My wife is a quilter and wants to make a quilted wallet of her own- she has seen other women with them, but cannot find it in the store (i.e. JoAnns Fabrics, local quilting shops) Could anyone direct me in the right direction? We would love it if there is a free pattern on the web, but if you know of a pattern in print in a catalogue or magazine, that would be great as well! Thanks.

Anybody know of a quilter in the San Diego area?
Q. I'd like to have my children's old school uniforms cut up and sewn into a quilt. The woman I was going to use is on hiatus until March. I'm not looking for fancy or hand quilted as long as the finished product is nice. If you know the approximate price, that would be helpful as well.

A. I bet you can find someone at one of these links. good luck and this last link, the assocation is also located in san diego but they look to be a bit "fancier" than the first two links

How would you translate "quilter" in french?
Q. I tried google translate, and the translation is retarded, Can someone help me? I do not mean QUITTER. a quilter, in english, is someone who makes quilts. And the french word "edredon" is not an accurate translation for the english word quilt. The accurate translation is "courtepointe", but other than saying "fabriqueur/se de courtepointe" (which doesnt sound accurate enough to me) , I cant find a better way of saying quilter..
Asked by Delphine F - Sat Oct 14 23:16:02 2006 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Hi, As "quilt" means courtepointe, quilter logically means "courtepointier". This word actually exists, but is seldom found on French websites. It seems that courtepointier is more used in Switzerland.

A. Get this book for her - She needs nothing more than basic sewing supplies. She can sew by hand or by machine. I prefer the sewing machine - others may prefer hand sewing. There are sites for beginners that are also helpful. This one is for a sampler quilt, which is variety of blocks & includes supplies needed - All the supplies needed are available in fabric stores.

How heavy is quilter's grade fabric? Can I use it to upholster a chair?? I just bought some online and?
Q. hope that I didn't make a mistake!!!
Asked by kate - Mon Jan 4 22:40:19 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Quilter's grade cotton is a medium weight..it is not as heavy as a twill (like cotton jeans with no stretch). You can upholster in this if you like..depends on how much you use the chair. It is not upholstery weight fabric by any means. I have used all different grades of fabric on all kinds of furnishings over the years...wait till it comes in before deciding if it will work for you or not.

A. Yes, quilters do rock! I like American block patterns done with funky batiks. Log cabin is a favourite. Do you belong to a Quilt Group - I found this very stimulating. Do you go to quilt shows? Do you subscribe to a quilt magazine such as Quilters' Newsletter Magazine? (This gives dates for all the Quilt Shows in the States) Or try Quilting Arts for adventurous stuff. Have a look at the site www.patsythompsondesigns. com. Join an online quilt group - Yahoo Groups lists plenty.

Q. has anyone relaced the O rings on the Quilter's Cruise Control wheels?
Asked by Sharon - Sun Jan 24 18:41:03 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. No, but I have replaced many in my chosen trade. If you're having problems removing then, use a small crochet hook.put the hook end under the O ring and twist slightly. That will remove it from the grove it fits in. Take the original to an auto parts store, they will sell you new ones. Generally they will only cost you a quarter or so.

A. There is no "right" answer to this question. There are a lot of great machines and frames on the market, ranging in cost from a couple thousand dollars up to forty or fifty thousand. It depends on what you want to do. You can buy a top end machine that has a 36" arm, a frame capable of handling an oversized king quilt, and a computer that will run the machine and stitch the design for you. On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are frames that are designed to hold a domestic sewing machine (although I wouldn't use one with an arm shorter than 9"). Here are a couple of resources for you: 1. There's a new issue of Quilt magazine that has an article and a list of midarm through longarm machines. 2. Join the Yahoo Groups called… [cont.]
