From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Quilting is a sewing method done to join two or more layers of material together to make a thicker padded material. A quilter is the name given to someone who works at quilting. The process of quilting uses a needle and thread to join two or more layers of material together to make a quilt. Typical quilting is done with three layers: the top fabric or quilt top, batting or insulating material and backing material. The quilter's hand or sewing machine passes the needle and thread through all layers and then brings the needle back up. The process is repeated across the entire piece where quilting is wanted. A straight or running stitch is commonly used and these stitches can be purely functional or decorative and elaborate. Quilting is done on bed spreads, art quilt wall hangings, clothing, and a variety of textile products. Quilting can make a project thick, or with dense quilting, can raise one area so that another stands out. Quilting can be done by hand, by sewing machine, or by a spacialist longarm quilting system. GNU Free Documentation License Does anyone know a good place to get wallet patterns on the web or in print? My wife is a quilter.? Q. I am looking for a good place that might have a large selection of patterns for wallets that you would sew yourself. My wife is a quilter and wants to make a quilted wallet of her own- she has seen other women with them, but cannot find it in the store (i.e. JoAnns Fabrics, local quilting shops) Could anyone direct me in the right direction? We would love it if there is a free pattern on the web, but if you know of a pattern in print in a catalogue or magazine, that would be great as well! Thanks. You can go to any number of quilting magazines and get the plans and the material for quilters but, be ready to pay the prices. The wooden one (all wood) are the cheapest at around $600.00 the wood with metal part will go around $800.00 and of course the factory material will be in the neighborhood of 1500. Q. Do I need to hire a quilter who has a long arm to do it? Or could I do it with my own little machine? Asked by feline*love - Thu Oct 18 04:43:06 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. You will need a "walking foot" for your machine. The walking foot has feed dogs on the bottom of the foot so that your quilt will feed evenly between the foot and the feed dogs on the machine. This keeps your backing from puckering and bunching up. You could also try "free motion" quilting with a darning foot. The feed dogs are put down on the machine and you move the quilt to obtain the desired design. There are many books and magazines that describe both processes as well as classes at your local quilt shop. I would try both on a small sample "sandwich" before investing your time and energy on a larger quilt. I am a professional long-arm quilter. You do not need to have a professional quilt your quilt, however there are some… [cont.] Answered by michelle3184 - Thu Oct 18 09:35:24 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "quilter" Quilts crafted to bring comfort to grieving families of fallen soldiers
