Maggots in the kitchen do I have to throw all my food away?
Q. I was cleaning behind the fridge and I found five or six maggots. Now, I've always heard that if you find five or six there are probably a zillion more. I am a fairly clean house keeper, so I think a piece of garbage snuck behind the fridge. But anyway, do I need to throw everything out?

A. If they were behind the fridge in absolutely no contact with food - then it is a pretty safe bet that your food in the fridge is fine - Use a 1 part bleach to 4 parts water to clean the entire area behind the fridge - that is the only chemical known to kill the little buggers - are you sure they are maggots and not termites??? I would check into it especially if you are a homeowner...

How do I remove water/stains from OLD glass ?
Q. I love sun purple glass! I have several beautiful pieces that have water stains or some other kind of stain that I cannot remove. I've tried Bar Keepers Friend. I have soaked them in CLR for 2 weeks. I even soaked them in Coca Cola (it melts nails) for a week and still won't come out. Any great wisdom would be appreciated. thank you!!
Asked by chelle - Tue Jul 6 14:50:53 2010 - Cleaning & Laundry - 3 Answers - Comments

A. What you are thinking of stains is more likely devitrification and can only be removed by polishing. Glass is silicon dioxide with other oxides in solution. Under certain conditions the solution breaks down and some of the chemicals etch out, leaving behind the white "stain" of silicon oxide - but if you think of it as little tiny bits of sand attached to the clear solution you will see why vinegar, CLR, etc. are not going to attack it - sand is pretty tough.

Tell me what you think of this piece (the first few paragraphs of my chapter)?
Q. I remember, not too long ago, the memories of being an orphan, and my imaginary outlook on the world guiding me. My mother, Isabella, died. She wanted me, of course. Why would anyone want to abandon an innocent child? There was no justifying this except that my keeper died. If she were alive, she would not leave me because I was special. You may not agree, no one else might agree, and mankind could probably prove it scientifically why I was just an ordinary babe; it still wouldn t make a difference. They were just words spoken words that I tried to make myself believe believe that I was special words to keep me going. Sometimes, it s better to just accept the truth but depression hurts. The past held great miseries, and caused so much… [cont.]

A. The good: 1) Great emotion -Good job capturing the character's feelings and interpretation of herself. 2) Good variation in sentence structure -There aren't too many, "I did this," and, "I did that," sentences. The bad: 1) Overuse of ellipses -This is perhaps the thing that got to me most. When you're going to use an ellipsis for dramatic effect, it works best peppered in sparsely. You don't want too many because it reduces the dramatic effect and spoils the piece. Ever heard of having too much of a good thing? That's what's going on here, so I suggest you try cutting down your usage of the "dot dot dot". 2) Overuse of commas -This is just a minor grammatical thing which can be fixed with a little editing.… [cont.]

Why do some people get so worked up over a peice of cloth?
Q. In Reno, Nevada a shop keeper flew a Mexican flag above an American flag. A U.S. Army vet cut it down. Now everyone is getting worked up over a peice of cloth. Dont they know that it is what is inside you the matter and a flag is just a piece of cloth to indentfy what country your from? I *do* live in the usa and have all my life.
Asked by Mr. Dog - Thu Oct 4 12:12:20 2007 - Politics - 26 Answers - Comments

A. That "peice" of cloth represents the heritage, valor and honor of the United States of America, and should be given a position of priority whenever displayed with other flags. It is a symbol of our great nation, something that far few people take very seriously today. That "peice" of cloth deserves to be recognized, revered and saluted because it stands for more than just a way to "indentfy" what country you're from; yes, it matters more what's "inside" your heart, but our flag is the standard for our nation. Respect it. Revere it. Honor it. -RKO- 10/04/07

If You Notice Someone Drop Something Of Theirs And You Take It For Yourselff, Is That Considered Stealing?
Q. If you notice someone drop or leave something of theirs behind without them realizing such as money, cell phone, piece of jewelry... and you take it; is that considered legally stealing? Is there a such thing as "finders keepers" in the real world?

A. This happened to me. I was walking down a side street with a silk scarf, hand-painted by a friend in my pocket. I had taken it off from around my neck because of the heat and stuffed it into my slash-pocket. When I got to the corner to turn, I noticed that I had lost it and turned around to find a well-dressed woman hugging her leather bag in front of her. I asked her nicely, but point blank, if she had found my scarf, and when she said 'no' rather undecidedly, I went on to explain that it meant something to me, as it was designed for me by a friend. Her response was to hug her bag tighter. I knew she had it; she knew I knew she had it, but what could I do? Grab her bag and rummage through it? I was too polite to do that, and she was too… [cont.]

Territorial Angel Fish Leading to Fin Rot, Experienced Fish Keepers Only Please.?
Q. Hey guys, hoping someone can help. I have a 60 gallon community tank. Which contains 6 angels, 1 of them being small, a rainbow fish and a few other bottom cleaners. They would get along great. I have recently seen a problem with the largest to angel fish in there, both are males. They are nipping at each other, each time in the same area of the tank, so I guess its territorial. Both of them, no other fish, just them have developed fin rot. I'm treating with mela fix, but if they keep doing this it will never go away. I just started planting and currently have wisteria, sagittaria subulata in the back, as a background plant, and dwarf sagittaria subulata in the front. They are growing pretty well right now, but not enough for fish to hide… [cont.]

A. It's a martingale stop. If you don't use a running martingale, you can remove these from your reins by cutting the stitching that holds the two halves together.

Is it possible to determine the gender of my Gopher snake from a shed skin? Serious snake keepers only please!?
Q. I had assumed that my Great Basin Gopher snake (Pituophis catenifer deserticola) was a female, on the basis of the shape of the tail. But in the years since I have had her/him no eggs (or even slugs, infertile eggs) have ever been laid. My snake just had his/her first shed of the new year. The old skin came off in one beautiful, complete piece. On the cast off skin, on each side of the vent is a tiny, reddish, protrusion between about one sixteenth (1/16) and three thirty-seconds (3/32) of an inch long. I am wondering if they could be parts from hemipeins; thus indicating that my snake is a male, instead of the female that I used to believe that I had? Or might these very tiny, protrusions be vestigial legs? Are there any other… [cont.]

A. There is no way short of probing to tell if your snake is male or female from the shed. The red spots are visible on both males and females, and I've never noticed colubrids shedding sperm plugs like pythons do. Boas don't either. There are no vestigial legs on gopher snakes or any colubrid, not even internally. The lack of eggs means nothing either. Many females never lay eggs unless they are bred. I've never had a female lay infertile eggs yet and I have a lot of snakes. I have heard of people counting the scales from past the vent to determine sex, but probing is probably the most accurate and easiest to do. Any reptile vet, breeder or reptile store should be able to do it for you.

Why can't we acheive the world piece using non-violence?
Q. According to Gandhiji (greatest peace keeper of the current history), there is always a solution to every problem using non-violence. Then why we always go to war at every front? Why don't we correct ouselves first before trying to correct others? Why don't we give up our ego of power? We can never force people to get issues resolved. When our kids cry at home for a perticular thing, do we give that to him or do we wage a war with him? Why can't India give Kashmir to Pakistan which can save so many people's life? Why can't Israelis give what palestininas needs? No amount of land could be precious enough to shed so many lives. Only thing that can change the world is love, love and love. A. The coalition of the willing (36 countries with boots on the ground and 78 countries offering logistic support) that went in to Iraq, went in under UN charter and 14 different resolutions from the 90 cease fire agreement. Nato is currently involved in helping train Iraqi troops and police. Canada is doing a very good job helping us in the war against terrorism with their troops that are deployed in Afghanistan. The UN peace keepers seem to have their hands full in Africa, the Ivory coast and Haiti, along with other locations.

Advanced Keepers Only - Septicemia?
Q. Not for novices. Last night I was looking at my Shubunkin because he had a strange lump in his side. I've see this lump before but it disappeared after a day or two. While looking at it last night I noticed there are more than 1, his fins are clamped and he stayed near the surface. These almost look like white zits and there are about 4. It is not ick, I know ick, seen it in person and successfully treated it. These are much bigger than ick and appear to be pushing the fish's scales out a touch. Now while checking him out I noticed my Veiltail has what appears to be Septicemia with bloody streaks in the anal and caudal fins. I immediately checked the water. 72F, p H 7.8-8.0, Amm 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 10-15 ppm. These two goldfish are… [cont.]

A. Unfortunately the symptoms you describe sound a lot like bacterial tuberculosis, and a bad infection at that. Tuberculosis is very difficult to treat in fish. It can also be harmful to humans if it gets in open cuts. Handle with care when doing water changes and wash your hands good afterward. The best possible treatment would be to find a vet that knows how to give a fish an antibiotic injection. Other than that you can give the fish antibiotic baths and anti-biotic fish food. The food is hard to find, I've only found it at Petland. If you're going to save your fish at all you will have to be aggressive. Unfortunately you will have to ruin your cycle in your tank because you need to get antibiotics in the tank. This means you'll have to… [cont.]

Then they are out and about doing the same thing they were arrested for! Now look at the NON-violent offenders, who have to spend the rest of their lives in prison, cos they don't have that bargaining power to get them out! The suspect have rights, but the victim doesn't! A. Take a piece of card stock and fold it in half. On the open end, cut a little window in the top, and a half circle out of both layers. Cut a circle and sandwich it between the 2 other cards with a brad right down the middle of where the center of the circle would be. Draw the numbers onto the circle within the little window. You can experiment by cutting the card stock down to the exact size that you want, and sticking the sides down with double stick tape, while keeping the circle small enough that the tape won't interfere. .
